Nanny Issues
Welcome to Sweet Peas. We have put together this guide to help you with some issues to discuss with your nanny before hand. We recommend that the family and nanny put in writing what they have agreed on.
General Issues
- Salary. What is the weekly rate of pay? Is it gross or net? What taxes will the family be paying for the nanny? The major taxes are income, social security, and Medicare. When does the family pay? Weekly is typical. Please check with your tax preparer for more information.
- What are the nanny's responsibilities? Professional nannies normally are responsible for all child-related cleaning, laundry, tiding up the kitchen and cooking for the children. Will nanny be in charge of going to the park and play dates etc.? Some nannies will do full charge house cleaning if discussed before hand.
- How detailed a debriefing is expected at the end of the day.
- Vacations and holidays. Most families give their nanny one to two weeks paid vacation at the end of their first year. Major holidays off with pay.
- When the family travels. When the family travels without the nanny, she should be paid for this time since it wasn't her choice and she needs to count on set income.
- Traveling with the nanny. Set hours and days should be discussed and agreed upon before travel. Is she getting paid more during this time?
- Use of the nanny's car. How often will the nanny need to use her car? If the nanny is driving a long distance she should be reimbursed .33 per mile.
- Raises. Families generally give at least 3% raises after the first year of service. You can also give holiday bonuses.
- All of these issues apply to part-time as well as full-time nannies
